The Conflicts about Fluoride in Drinking Water

The addition of fluoride in drinking water has been a long-drawn out battle between opposing sides. Many areas of the world have had no choice in the decision made by the governing body to add fluoride in the drinking water supplies. Other areas have been allowed to vote for their preference when more are still pondering on the benefits and negatives regarding fluoride in drinking water. The facts tend to be contradictory and it can be difficult for many people to choose one side over the other. Purists claim that any addition to the water is unnecessary while others claim that the additions are for the good of the people. Most are undecided or confused because of the conflicting information being thrown from all sides.

Is there a right or wrong answer on this issue? It’s hard to say but majority rules in a lot of cases. It is up to the individual to decide what is best for them personally but it is up to everyone to decide what the best method is in general. The best option is the one that feels most comfortable to the whole community. It is hard to discount the benefits that come from adding fluoride in drinking water. However, does the government have a right to enforce this type of addition whether it will benefit health or not seems to be the strongest argument against fluoride? This is because people have a fear of what will be next and wish to make their own decisions instead of having a general decision forced upon them.

The Arguments For and Against Fluoride in Drinking Water

It is easy to argue in favor for the addition of fluoride in drinking water. Fluoride is essential in dental care and the addition of fluoride in drinking water can possibly negate some of the effects that many people cause to their teeth due to negligence. In the long run, added fluoride in the system may cut dental costs, as the teeth will be in a better condition. Dental health is extremely important to most people particularly because of the costs incurred in the repair and treatment of gum disease and dental problems. Fluoride can help strengthen teeth in general and prevent gum disease. The parties who argue in favor of this addition claim that scientific studies prove that areas which have fluoride in the drinking water also have higher levels of dental health and fewer cases of dental problems.

The sides that argue against fluoride in drinking water however, claim that scientific studies show that large amounts of fluoride are dangerous in a human’s system and that areas with fluoride in the water systems also have a high level of chemicals and toxins. More importantly they claim that fluoride in drinking water also increases the risk of arsenic in the water supply. As both sides claim that they are backed up by scientific studies, it can be hard to make a choice but a choice is what most people are now required to take as there are an increasing number of groups trying to call for voting that ends the systems that adds fluoride to drinking water.
